Evaluation Question 7 script

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

My creative post on this question I understand may be quite hard to hear and understand, therefore I have typed up the copy of the script in which I used.
Within this process of making our product I have learnt many new important ways to work and deal with new technologies. The most important technologies i have used is the  film recorder and its equipment and an apple mac with all it's softwares I have used such as final cut and livetype.

Film Recorder

  • Tapes are difficult to upload straight to the computer because of the leads involved.
  • you have to be very careful with the tape filming  because it is easy to film over if you watch it back and then forget to fast forward the tape back to the
  • Cameras with adjustable microphones do in fact pick up every sound in the background and so the place must be silent so the noise wanted to be recorded is heard with clarity and correction.
  • The lighting in which you film within is very important because even with the slightest darkness it is difficult to see the surroundings.
  • Zooming in and out make the pictures fuzzy and so it is best just to move closer personally.

Equipment

  • It is best to film with a stand otherwise if you use just your hand then your pictures will be very shaky and unclear on screen.
  • Camera should be fully charged to get the best quality of filming you intend to have.
  • The tape you use should be new for each film you attempt to make otherwise you have the danger of having other film on your sequence.

The Computer

  • Final cut is a very good app to use to edit your filming.
  • Editing takes a very long time to get everything precise and if you want your film to flow you must make objects that you are editing in fade in and our otherwise they will appear suddenly and abruptly making your film look unprofessionally and messy.
  • You should record a movement at least three or four times in order to be able to edit it clearly and as a backup if the other recordings where shaky or had a problem within them.
  • Music is also an important part of technology that makes the film, without it our film wouldn't of had the dramatic, suspended feel to it.
  • Within the editing process you must use final cut and fade in and out extra products on top of the film itself.
  • Livetype can be used to create credits, must appear on the screen long enough to be able to read, must be clear.

Evaluation Question 7

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Evaluation Question 6

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you fell you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

My group started upon the making of our preliminary task having not that much experience within the making or filming a film clip or editing software on an Apple Mac. We had no idea how to film and just set out to do so knowing that we had to include 4 main aspects of camera usage. Our match on action was reasonably good however throughout the film the camera would move. The lighting was dim and the sound location wasn't ideal. I feel as if we have very much learnt from these mistakes and as a result our final product is much better. I have therefore, identified in the film below all the key aspects as of which I have learnt from the preliminary task and the difference between that and our final product.

Evaluation Question 5 continued

Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/address your target audience?

By carrying out some interviews and surveys it is obvious that we attracted the right Target audience. And this was done through the use of a main protagonist and having a narrative. It also addressed them by having the title of the film as Stockholm Syndrome, a syndrome which people are familiar with so understand romance is involved. Again the introduction to both characters addressed our female audience because clearly from some of those interviews already they were question what would happen between the two of them.

Reasonings for whether or not our target audience changed from what we originally wanted our product to target

Evaluation Question 4

Who is the target audience for your product?

The target audience for our product was originally females under the age of 18. This in my opinion has stuck throughout the final production. However, I feel as if the actual target audience for the final product was different to what we originally wanted. This was because the portrayal of a 'girly' feel to the opening lacked a little and the overall story-line evoked our target audience rather than our product itself.

Evaluation Question 3 continued

I have created a possible interview between the media institution that would most likely distribute our company and us as a production company selling our piece/product to them as a company.

Evaluation Question 2

2. How does your media represent particular social groups?

Social Groups is in reference to those people who share similar characteristics that are then grouped under a particular name. Therefore we question whether our film showed a variety of different social groups and how.

In what ways does the media product use, develop or change forms and conventions of real media products?

OUR FINAL FILM OPENING

Why the music is used and evaluation

We have decided to use this music for the beginning of the film because it creates a mysterious but suspense mood to the piece. It isn't too thriller or scary and in fact personally i would not base this with a typical burgle, dangerous music. This is good because the scary aspect is only a small aspect at the beginning of the film so we would not like our opening to portray that the genre of our film is that of a horror or thriller.

We decided upon using the upbeat clubland music for our soundtrack to the film when Ben enters the house because it is typical for a young woman to be listening to nowadays. It also reflects music which is around in contemporary times, highlighting the modern style of our film. We also as a group thought it sounded the most appropriate to be playing on a radio in a modern context.

We have used police siren sound effects at the beginning of our piece when Ben is burgling the house. This conveys to the audience that Ben is in danger and is a criminal.

The soundtrack we have used is also uncopyrighted and so is available for us for us to use for our opening sequence.

Chosen music

Here is our songs as of which we have decided to use for our piece....

1.   https://soundcloud.com/briannabarwell/sound-effects-police-siren

The above link is the sound of the police sirens we have decided to use in our opening as Ben runs down the street towards the house. It shall fade out however when he enters the house.

 2.    https://soundcloud.com/briannabarwell/okzide-miles-away

The above link is the sound of the music we use as the song Georgia is listening to on the radio. It shall come on quietly in the background as he enters the house and get louder the closer he gets to her in the kitchen.

3.   https://soundcloud.com/briannabarwell/chase

The above link is the final chosen music for the beginning of our opening. It will fade in at the beginning of the opening and play as he runs. However, it will begin to fade out when he enters the house or begins to enter.

Music Ideas for the running

https://soundcloud.com/briannabarwell/chase
-This one was suitable because it creates an air of mystery without making atmosphere too scary or horror like because we do not want to portray our film as a horror movie when this is just a minor aspect to the film. It creates suspense, tension and excited the audience to see where he is going.

-This music we only considered but however it is far to scary sounding and dramatic for the piece we want it to go alongside. It creates too much of a scary atmosphere when the film is nothing to do with horror at all.

Music Ideas for the radio sounds

- This one we found on youtube. It is a sound effect of a radio tuning which we originally thought we may like. However we questioned why she would be tuning in and out of radio stations, this could also confuse the audience to say that what the radio station is saying is important when it really isn't.

https://soundcloud.com/briannabarwell/okzide-miles-away  -This one is much more of a sound of a song that would be found playing on a modern radio. Which would fit in with Georgia just doing the washing up and listening to music at the same time.

*We then searched all sites with unnamed artists musics but none where to our liking or what we wanted therefore we chose between these two ideas for which one we would use in the actual film.

Music Ideas for sound effects

Police Siren Ideas

https://soundcloud.com/briannabarwell/sound-effects-police-siren

-This one is very much what we were looking for and sounds believable, realistic and the sound is that of a modern siren.

-This one is good in terms of sound but however the siren sounds to much like one from an american police car and so wouldn't fit the location for our film.

-This one is very much a basic police siren but has some pauses within it. It sounds modern but is a little fuzzy at times.

Sound Effects

As well as music we also require several sound effects. We want to have a police siren that plays as Ben is running away so it is obvious to the audience that he has done wrong and that he is danger himself of being caught.
We want the sound of Georgia washing up so it is again clear that someone is in the house and so the boy can react to this. Therefore we also want the availability to hear a bang of a door when Ben is downstairs in the basement so this makes him jump and hurries the film opening up to find her.

What music we are wanting

Music for our film

Music

Music acts as a very important part within the making of a film. It can set the scene because it is able to portray a particular feeling or mood to the audience. It also makes the film more interesting if it is just action happening on screen and no speech or talking.

Therefore we request to use music and edit it to our film. It is important we pick the right music and that it fits the film because otherwise it could portray a completely different mood than intended or generally make the film look bad from the beginning.

Evaluation of Location

Decided location

We have decided upon the location 2 within the mind map. This is because we feel this is most likely to be where Georgia herself would live. Although the house is on a main road the actual house itself would be easier to block up and hind away within.

We all went to the house to look at in person. We also allocated a possible spot that would be a good way for how Ben would be able to burgle the house. This is because the house has a basement to it and so like most criminals he can sneak he's way in through a small slitted window. The house itself is very modern looking so fits with the genre and general 'look' of the film.  However, the colours within the house are quite bright within the basement however we could argue this is because Georgia has a happy innocent life and Ben is about to ruin it. This could also would emphasis the shock of the chemistry that emerges between them later on, because they are two completely different people within society.

When we are filming we would like the car to stay within the drive, this therefore shows someone is in. The main rooms will sill use are the whole of the basement that Ben will search for the person. Then the main hallway of upstairs where again Ben looks around, and then the kitchen also is filmed for quite a long time to show someone is in the building.

Thoughts on each location idea

Location Ideas

Location

As our film is mainly set within one house all we needed to cast was the area as of which Ben Samuel will break into and end up capturing the young lady within. Therefore we want this house to be somewhere that isn't that busy but not to quite at the same time, this house will also need to look quite wealthy and have an easy place to break into. From the outside of the house it should look like there is someone in because he has just broke into a house, and is breaking into this out of panic to then take the people inside as capture.

Evaluation of casting

Chosen actress of Georgia

Georgia Actress candidate 3

Name: Christina Goedecke
Age: 17
Contact Details: CG@hotmail.co.uk

This artist also like the previous has an experience in the performing arts and acting background, this could therefore help within the production of our film and her as a part of it. She is average in height and so would be able to play the part of Georgia very well because her voice is also adult sounding and her facial features do not look young. However, she is not sure she will be available on the dates of our filming and would like us to confirm with her the dates and she will get back to us if we are wanting to cast her as the part or not.

Georgia Actress candidate 2

Name: Marcia Wiggins
Age: 17
Contact Details: MarciaWiggins@gmail.com

This girl is part of our production team and fits the requirements very well. She is tall enough to pass as an older girl so her playing age is older than her real age, her hair is dark preferred and it is mid length. Her vocal soundings aren't young like because they are average in pitch and she speaks with diction. She also has experience of drama as she is involved with the school's performing arts academy and under takes drama as an AS option.

Georgia actress candidate 1

Name: Francesca Mallet
Age: 17
Contact Details: Franmallet@hotmail.com

This candidate is going for the part of Georgia in our film 'Stockholm Syndrome'. She fits several amounts of our requirements with dark hair, not too long or short. Her hair is very dark and her face complexion fits the part. However, in terms of her playing age she is let down for this particular part. This is because she is very short in height making her look younger than she is and also her face also is quite young looking. This would affect how she played Georgia because she is suppose to be an older girl so must look like one. Her voice also is young sounding as it is higher in pitch but however she speaks with diction and is very understandable.

Chosen Actor of Ben Samuels

Fourth Consideration

Name: Lewis Broughton
Age: 17
Contact Details: lewisbroughton@hotmail.com

This particular artist meets our requirements very well. Although he is particulary short in height and so his playing age would look younger than what we want. However he has the light skin and fair hair we wanted for him to have, and the hair length isn't to short because it is very long and wild on top, this way we could make his hair look messy in hair and makeup design. He looks quite innocent and not very scary for a criminal however this could work, making the woman fall for him and act as a shock because you wouldn't expect a criminal to look like that. His voice is quite deep suiting our part for what we wanted.

Sunday, 14 April 2013

Third Consideration

Name: Jack Howie
Aged: 21
Contact Details: JHowie1992@gmail.com

This boy meets our expectations more, consequently because of his age he looks older and could play the part of Ben Samuels precisely. He has the facial feature wanted for Ben Samuels as he already has facial hair which could make the part of Ben Samuels, would as a criminal not have time to shave or do anything to his appearance. This particular artist is similar in the height size Patrick, as is quite small so would depend on our casting for Georgia on whether or not we were to pick or cast him. His voice is deep and clear, which could be applied very well to the part of Ben Samuels. This artist is a possibility for us to cast as Samuels, however there is not much we could do to him as a film company to transform him enough to look different for the film. However, we could use wigs to change hair colours etc.

Second Consideration

Name: Patrick Herbert
Age: 18
Contact Details: PatrickH@gmail.co.uk

This next boy is also a consideration to play the part of Ben Samuels within our film. He's hair and physique is very much what we are looking for because we has longish hair that hides a bit of his face. The would allow for the transformation of Ben to look very different, this only problem is that his hair is very dark and preferably we would like to cast someone with lighter colored hair, although we have not yet come across any one. This is because it is more of a vast different to dye his hair darker to look different than it would be too lighten this particular artists hair. However, this artist is quite short, shorter than what we wanted to cast. This could therefore make him look younger and less believable to play an order man, we also have to take into consideration height within the casting of Georgia because preferably we would like Ben taller.

Saturday, 13 April 2013

First Consideration

Name: Joe Egan
Aged: 17
Contact Details: jegan@hotmail.co.uk

This particular boy meets some of our requirements for the part of Ben Samuels but unfortunately not all of them. Preferably his hair is a little to dark and neat. Whereas, we had in mind for Ben Samuels as a criminal to have slightly more manic and messy hair, and a little bit lighter. So it will be easy for him to be transformed into a neater looking, darker haired chap. However, Joe could play the 22 year old because he has features that make him look older than he could be, allowing him to be able to play the part of Ben Samuels with confidence. His style and look overall is too neat to play Ben Samuels who is suppose to be one of the most wanted criminals, he also wears braces which could effect the age in which Ben would look within the film. However, his voice is clear and concise, but speaks with a formal tone which may not necessarily show Ben as a troubled criminal because he is suppose to be from a trouble background, and so may not talk with such clarity and pronunciation on words.

What we are looking for in an Actress

Actor to play Georgia

What we are looking for in an Actor

Actor to play Ben Samuels is needed

Who we need

WHO DO WE NEED TO BE IN OUR FILMING?

To film our films opening sequence we only require to cast the main man (Ben Samuels) and woman (Georgia). We therefore asked for any budding actors within the performing arts academy within our school, which helpfully me and marcia are both also involved within. We gained 4 actors that where keen to do so and also one of our production team Fintan also agreed to auditioning for the part also, and so we carried out our opinions on them and took our time choosing.

Casting

The next few blog posts are to do with the casting of our film in the production process. The casting process is always very stressful for both the company and the actors as it is very important you get the 'right' people to play the suitable part, if they do not look the part the film will not have the effect intended.
When choosing it is essential for us to get their contact details to arrange the time and meeting places for filming days, we cannot hire any one that does not turn up to rehearsals or filming, this could possibly ruin the films quality because time for editing will be cut.
When casting it may be possible for us to take into consideration the following:

  • Looks
  • Age
  • Style
  • Gender
  • Hair Colour
  • Wage
  • Weight
  • Ability
  • Versatility
  • Voice
  • Reliability

Final Audience evaluation

Our Target Audience Specifically

TEENAGE FEMALES UNDER THE AGE OF 18.
GENERALISED: FEMALES

We have evaluated and resigned our film to be targeted at Females Under the age of 18. However, we are initially guessing that people would come to see our film when in reality the film industry within the box office is very tough and does not necessarily guarantee an audience.
There are many 'niche' factors in which audiences say tie them into coming to watch a film or not. For example, the location may effect if a person wants to watch the film or not. If the film is set in London any people who love London will want to watch and the same way as if the film was filmed in America. The actors are also said to make people watch a film, even if it does not look particularly interesting many women would say they would go to watch a Channing Tatum film just for the entertainment of looking at him for 2 or more hours. Therefore the casting and location settings for our film will also play a huge part within the target audience for our film.

Limitations on production

UK film audiences

Both of the above images show the graphs and estimations of the most likely way of showing films within the UK, this can be founded on the BFI film index website. This shows and suggests that a film created will in some way be guarteened an audience if distributed and shown within the UK. However, again the top circle shows that within the UK the biggest audience is not within the cinema screenings but through television showings

Audience

Audiences

This shows the top rated films that where UK and managed to target worldwide audiences, notably none of these films are Romantic Dramas or in fact Romantic within their main story-lines. This could therefore limit the production of our own film to not be that successful if we were to screen and produce to worldwide audiences. Therefore, we may be better of to target a British audience only and generate the film to be produced to DVD releases within other countries.

Audiences Researching

Gender of audiences

This survey shows the most highly rated films by male and females within the UK and Republic of Ireland. The Romantic  films I have identified in order to relate back to our own target audiences, the film 'One Day' was rated second by 81% of females showing that romantic dramas may be more for the females than the males, this is again supported by the romantic drama film Twilight which also was more highly rated within the female category.

Audience Research

This Survey I found on the BFI website in one of their Statistical Yearbooks of 2012. It shows the average amount in percentage of the most likely people that will go to the cinema. I am looking at the more recent years of 2010+ because that will be the audience generations of which my film will be distributed to. Therefore it is shown that the most likely people to attend the cinema are those of the young ages of 15-24 and those least likely to go to the cinema are of the middle ages (in 2011). It is important to notice that within every year the most likely people to go to the cinema is the younger generations. Therefore, it is important for the target audience of your film to be of those younger ages if your production company is wanting to screen films within cinemas and be guaranteed an audience.

Romantic Drama Audience research

Establishing our target audience

Our Target Audience

Next we as a group had to establish our own target audience for the film we are producing. This was easier for us after having done our research especially with looking at The Vow because that also is a romantic drama. Although we could just say our piece attracts both viewers of dramas and romance films, this isn't specific enough for us, as a production company to work from and target towards. Therefore I have decided to do a little more research into the target audience of romantic dramas in order to get a specific, realistic target audience for our film. This will then help in the creating of our films opening etc. I have done this by looking at a few more surveys on the IMDB website for romantic drama stated movies.

Computerized Logo

I have created the logo for our production company on the computer to be edited into the beginning of our film and look professional.
